March 2011 -- Congratulations to Valérie Bergeron, PhD student, and her University of Montreal Carabin Cheerleading team who won the first Provincial Academic competition of the Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec. October 2010 -- Drs. Ghislaine Fontés and Bader Zarrouki's new article "Glucolipotoxicity age-dependently impaired beta cell function in rats despite a marked increase in beta cell mass" is published in Diabetologia 2010, 53:2369-2379.

September 2010 -- Dr. Melkam Kebede received a Travel Award from the CHUM Research Center (CRCHUM) to attend the 13th Annual CDA/CSEM Professional Conference and Annual Meetings in Edmonton, Alberta, next October 20 to 23. 

June 2010 -- Dr. Poitout was appointed as a National Board member of the American Diabetes Association for a 3-year term starting January 1, 2011.

June 2010 -- Meriem Semache, PhD student, received a scholarship from Diabète Québec.

May 2010 -- Isma Benterki, a second year student at University of Montreal and doing a summer stage in the Poitout Lab, received a scholarship from Diabète Québec.

May 2010 -- The Poitout lab is part of a research project recently funded by the Consortium Québécois sur la décourverte du médicament (CQDM). This project is entitled "Evanescent field biosensor for label-free and real-time in situ monitoring of multiple analyses ex vivo and in vivo". This is a collaborative project headed by Dr. Emanuel Escher from Sherbrooke University. 

March 2010 -- Dr. Vincent Poitout's new article: "Glucolipotoxicity of the pancreatic beta cell" is published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta 2010 March; 1801(3): 289-298.

March 2010 -- Dr. Melkam Kebede received a Travel Award from the Montreal Diabetes Research Center (MDRC) to attend the Keystone Symposia Diabetes meeting in Whistler, British Columbia, next April 12 to 17. 

February 2010 -- Dr. Ghislaine Fontés' new article: "Lack of preservation of insulin gene expression by a Glucagon-Like Peptide 1 agonist or a Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 inhibitor in an in vivo model of glucolipotoxicity" is published in Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice 2010 March; 87(3): 322-328 .

January 2010 -- Dr. Melkam Kebede received a travel award for the Keystone Symposia Diabetes meeting in Whistler, British Columbia, next April 12 to 17. She will be presenting a poster titled: "Metabolic Regulation of GPR40 Gene Expression".

December 2009 -- Meriem Semache, PhD student, received a grant of excellence from the Biochemistry department of the University of Montreal for her study project.

October 2009 -- Dr. Melkam Kebede's new article: "Lipid receptors and islet function: therapeutic implications?" is published in Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism, 11 (Suppl. 4), 2009, 10-20.

September 2009 -- Dr Thierry Alquier's new article: "Deletion of GPR40 Impairs glucose-induced insulin secretion in vivo in mice without affecting intracellular fuel metabolism in islets" is published in Diabetes 2009.

August 2009 -- Dr Vincent Poitout is the 2009 recipient for the Canadian Diabetes Association, Great-West Life, London Life, and Canada Life Young Scientist Award. The award will be presented at the 2009 International Diabetes Federation World Congress to be held in Palais des Congrès, Montreal, Quebec, October 18-22, 2009.

August 2009 -- Dr Ghislaine Fontes' new article: "Involvement of PAS Kinase and ERK ½ in palmitate inhibition of insulin gene expression in pancreatic beta cells" is published in Diabetes 2009 (58: 2048-2058).
